WHAT IS YOUR ROLE HERE AT INGRID & ISABEL?
My role here is the Senior Designer for the Ingrid & Isabel collection, which means, in a nutshell, I am responsible for concepting and creating each piece in the collection for every season based on what a mother’s needs are during her pregnancy and postpartum.
LET'S DO AN ICE BREAKER! OFF THE TOP OF HEAD, NAME YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS/BANDS YOU'RE LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?I love the Sound Cloud app and search for remixes of reggae or check out whatever is trending. I also love me some 90’s hip hop – Tribe Called Quest is a forever fave. I won’t ever turn off Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, or Daft Punk, Beyonce, Florence and the Machine, She & Him (especially the Christmas album). Ryan Adams’ older stuff. David Bowie, any day!
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS AS A DESIGNER THAT YOU THINK ABOUT EVERYDAY?
I think about what clothing dilemma a Mom or Mom-to-be might be dealing with during her pregnancy or right after, and how I can solve for that through product design. For example, what occasions does she need to dress for, and how can I add features into the pieces that add comfort and value for her? What types of fabrics will be most comfortable against her skin? What does she want to wear to work or when she is going out, and how can I be innovative and make those pieces better for her? How can I deliver the one thing she wants to wear six days a week? I also think about what’s happening with influencers and try to check my Bloglovin’ feed every day for what products are trending and ask if/how I can translate that to our consumer base.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT SO FAR AT INGRID & ISABEL?
Working on the Spring 2019 collection has been my favorite so far. I started less than a year ago, and the Fall 18 line was pretty much designed by the time I got here, so I had the opportunity to own the project from the beginning. I am so lucky to work with such a rad team of ladies – including our Merchant, Jen R. and Design Director, Jen D. who made my job on this project really enjoyable.
WHO/WHAT ARE YOU INSPIRED BY?
I get inspiration in so many different places and am always looking out for anything eye catching – whether it be interesting color combos, how various looks are being styled, or a cool new silhouette. I have been on a major Ulla Johnson kick for the last 6 months and personally relate to her aesthetic. When I have a little downtime, I often go down the rabbit hole of Instagram because I often discover new brands that way. It’s also really important for me to go out and shop the market in person to see how other designers/brands are using fabric, color and print. I went to Paris recently and was inspired by the street style there and my vintage finds!
AS A MOTHER, WHAT'S A PRODUCT/ITEM/SOLUTION/LIFE-HACK YOU WISH YOU GOT AHOLD OF DURING YOUR PREGNANCY?
I was working during my pregnancy at a company where the dress code was business attire, which meant no jeans, and that’s all I wanted to wear. It was a challenge to get dressed every day and still be comfortable and look put together in a work setting. I wish I had more work appropriate options that I could easily mix and match in an effortless way.
WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FASHION INDUSTRY HEADING IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
In terms of maternity fashion, I think we will see an even wider range of clothing options in various price points and aesthetics in order to serve a more personalized experience. We know that Mom doesn’t change her style when she is expecting, and there are more options and brands that exist than even 5 years ago, which cater to her individual style. I think we will see product design continue to be innovative too.
WHAT'S A HIDDEN TALENT NO ONE REALLY KNOWS ABOUT?
I am not sure if I have a hidden talent but I do have a guilty pleasure that no one really knows, except my husband. I am a totally obsessed with stand-up comedians. I love watching specials on Netflix or listening to them on satellite radio. Ali Wong, anyone?
